This is the first BMR race we attended this year. And of course it would be very hard to miss riders trying to navigate this trail. This is race one of two of the series on this trail and it takes the more commonly used line towards the bottom known as "World Cup". Although it is possible to go around this feature and take the easier line which riders did last year they will have added a five second penalty placed on their time this year! Which is the way it should be. It has been almost a year since the race down the mountain and anticipation has been building for both riders and spectators.

Last year had about thirty spectators on the hill and most found it hard to stand in the very technical areas. They came to watch the seven riders who would attempt not to fall while making their way down the hill in the fastest possible manner! Danny Baggs won the race last year with a time of 1:56 which was 8 seconds faster than second place and slower than Richard Lancaster's fastest time of a mid 1:40's time set back in 2001. Richard showed up last year and turned a 2:08, so what begs to be answered is wether Dan, Leland or some wild-card can beat or come close to Richard's time and if Richard shows what type of run he will have? The field of riders today was down to five from last years seven. Even so the fast riders turned out and included Leland, Dann, Nate, Josef and Jimmy who isn't so familiar with the trail but wanted to give it a go anyway. It was his third time down the hill and he was rocking his Kona Stinky! Riders were allowed one practice run and would have three race runs down the trail. The best of the three times would be used as your race run to determine the final standing. See results at the bottom of this page!

I witnessed four falls by three different riders while shooting today. Just about everyone fell and luckily there were no injuries! Having multiple spills in previous runs places pressure on the riders to perform and do it with no mistakes.

Riding this trail without making mistakes is very hard. The loose, steep, off camber flow of the trail keeps things sketchy for riders the whole way down. The Green Rock drop may be the hardest feature to nail. Basically it is about a four to five foot tall boulder that the trail goes over and then fades left and quickly turns right and it is off camber there just to make it extra sketchy.

Richard was there watching and having a good time watching people hanging it out while riding on the edge. He didn't know about the race until two days before so he decided to sit this one out. But he did mention it would be a good idea to get some out of town Pro's up here for the next race. If you have never seen Chainsmoke 2 and Richard's section of him riding this trail then check below!
Leland won with a time of 1:48 which is almost the course record within a second or two! Nate turned in a best time of 1:53 and Dann turned in a 1:54. Richard's comment on Leland's time of the day, was something like even if it wasn't the record it was close and really damn fast!

Overall both spectators and riders had a great time. People pushed their limits and nobody got hurt. The next race on this trail will be run down another line that is a little more technical than the WC line used in this race.
